Fabric Book
Photo transfers; vintage fabric, lace, beads; embellishments; machine & hand-stitching. C. 2007.
Using sewing skills learned in childhood and bookmaking skills learned as an adult, I devised a home for family photos and memorabilia: a fabric book. Smith Women was created in honor of five generations of women in my family---contains contemporary techniques of transferring photos to fabric, old techniques of quilting and hand-embroidery, and lots of memories.

More Conceptualism
(w/details)
Chapter One was the result of finding an older book and wanting to house the contents that were literally falling apart . All the pages were cut into rectangles to fit inside the frame---brass corners and map-covered wood trim added as enhancement. Chapter Two contains the pages of another sad old book, cut pages entered horizontally, in contrast to the vertical element of those in Chapter One.

Shoe Series II & III

Shoe Series I
Recycled shoe, leaves, bird & adornments. C. 2004.
Using a discarded woman's shoe as the "vehicle" provides an
excellent medium to work with, aside from lessening the pile
at the recycle center. This proved to be a great activity for
kids as well...they painted, glued, wrote, and sewed on their
recycled shoes, then gave them as gifts!
Miniature Book
Soldered glass slide cover & back with
commercial images, roof flashing, eyelets,
leather spine, waxed thread, & handmade
paper. 2.25x3x1 inch. C.2004
Created this tiny, incredible book several years ago in a workshop led by Beckah Krahula. The bookbinding process was simple---the soldering took some concentration. It's all about paying attention!

Altered Book II
Altered children's book with Lumiere paints over braille paper, corrugated paper and various other papers; embellished with cord, embroidery thread and coin trim. Duct tape on spine. C. 2006
The shape of this book inspired an exploration of writing---the characters, styles, and history. Each 2-page spread focuses on the scripts of France, Italy, Thailand & China, respectively, with ephemera from other countries added as embellishment.
Handmade Book
Hand-made journal with
paste paper, bead trim,
wire, plexi over cut
niche, bookpaper on
open signature spine.
C. 2003
A "round robin", which
involved 9 artists from
all over the United States.
The theme: Embodiment,
was self-interpretive and
invited us to create art in
the journals of eight other
artists. Each artist
contributed in her own style to each rotating journal and
then sent the current journal to the next artist on the list.
At the end of a year, we received our original journals
back---filled to the brim with outstanding and inspiring
artwork!
